Southend FC faces winding up order

League One team Southend United has been served with a winding up order by HMRC over claims for unpaid tax debts, the latest in a series of financial difficulties which have beset the football club in the last 10 years

A notice was filed on the official public record for insolvency petitions on 13 December 2018, and the petition is due to be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice on 6 February 2019. Southend United has been subject to several winding up orders over the last decade, once receiving four petitions in a six-month spell in 2010.

Chairman Ron Martin has thus far been able to clear the debts just before insolvency proceedings began. Currently standing at tenth in the table, the club has been trying to move to a new development for over 20 years, but has reported difficulties over gaining planning permission.

Southend United has made no comment on the proceedings.
