People in the news: RSM, MHA Moore and Smalley, BDO, Mazars

In this week’s accountancy career moves, senior hires and partner promotions at RSM, Progeny, MHA Moore and Smalley, BDO, Mazars

RSM has strengthened its real estate and construction team with the appointment of Irfan Butt FCA CTA as a tax partner. Butt joins RSM from PwC, where he provided tax advice to real estate funds and infrastructure. During this time, he was also involved in a large number of UK and pan-European M&A transactions involving funds and institutional investors. 

BDO has hired two partners; Oliver Back joins BDO in London and will head up the new contract and commercial risk practice. Joining from PwC, Black will be responsible for risk management to achieve greater value from their third party relationships on both the buy and sell side. Vanessa Lee joins the Leeds office as a tax partner in the private client team. With more than 22 years’ experience, Lee advises high net worth clients, families, family offices and trustees on complex tax planning. She joins from EY where she led the region’s private client team.

Mazars has appointed Frank Strachan as partner and head of tax investigations. Strachan joins with a national remit and will focus on driving growth in the tax investigations team as well as providing expertise and guidance to the private client team. He has over 30 years’ experience in representing clients subject to HMRC investigations. Strachan joins from Edwin Coe LLP, where he was head of tax.

MHA Moore and Smalley has appointed Alex Kelly as a partner in its Manchester office. Previously he was at Baldwins Group, and prior to that at Grant Thornton, as audit partner. He specialises in working with owner-managed businesses and international companies on accounting, auditing and financial reporting.

Financial advice firm Progeny has hired Adele Swaine and Tony Maleham as directors of newly-established Progeny Tax, both joining from Mazars LLP. The move will bring financial planning, investment management, private and corporate legal counsel and tax services together under one organisation. While at Mazars, Swaine was a private client senior tax manager, and Maleham was a tax partner.

Nexia International has appointed Ian Stone as chair of the global network. Hie is chair at Nexia Australia and joined the network's international board in November 2011 and has also held the position of regional chair of the Asia Pacific region for the last six years.
