People in the news: CIOT awards, Magma, BDO

In this week’s accountancy career moves, two prestigious CIOT awards granted, two partner promotions at Magma and BDO, CEO elected at Optimum Finance, vice president elected at ICAEW, director named at Moore Kingston Smith

Awards

Heather Self, corporate tax partner at Blick Rothenberg, has received the Council Award from the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) - the highest-ranking award that the Institute can give. This recognises her outstanding contributions to the life of the Institute and the profession as a whole. Self is the first woman to ever win this award.

David Gauke, head of public policy at Macfarlanes, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the CIOT Institute. The award is a mark of excellence bestowed on the grounds of particular distinction in the field of taxation. The award is based on Mr Gauke’s contribution as a member of the Treasury Select Committee, as shadow treasury minister, then as exchequer secretary, financial secretary to the treasury, chief secretary to the treasury and secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

 

Appointments

Magma, Chartered Accountants, has promoted Michelle Andrews to partner. Andrews was promoted from the role of tax manager and joined Magma back in 2014 from EY.

Pete Acloque joins BDO as an audit partner in the natural resources and energy team. He joins from PwC where he was a director.

Optimum Finance, has named Anthony Persse as CEO following the tragic death of the company’s founder, Richard Pepler, earlier this year. Persse previously worked at bePayd as a financial solutions director.

Moore Kingston Smith has appointed Edward Nkune as a director in its forensic accounting department. Nkune previously worked as a director at Forensic Risk Alliance.

Paysend has appointed Jairo Riveros as strategic advisor to support the Paysend Management team for its global business development and corporate strategy. Riveros previously worked at Artemis Worldwide as managing director.

Shard Capital, asset manager, has elected Ian Abrams to the Board as an independent non-executive director. Abrams is currently chairman of Orchard Funds.

The Portfolio Group has promoted Gillian Owen, from manager of their Manchester office to associate director. Owen was previously a manager at Robert Walters.
