Jim Meakin has joined Armstrong Watson as head of tax. Meakin has joined Armstrong Watson from RSM, where he held a number of senior positions including managing partner of their Newcastle office, head of their London tax practice and until recently he was RSM’s national head of tax. He has extensive experience across a wide range of sectors, in growing and developing businesses and in helping to solve client problems with a practical commercial style. He works proactively with businesses and their owners as a trusted adviser, using tax as a tool to deliver value and assisting with business challenges and long-term tax planning.
MHA Carpenter Box has appointed 11 new trainees over the past year to join their audit and business services teams in both their Worthing and Gatwick offices. They will be studing towards the ACCA or ACA qualification. The audit team in Worthing welcomes Emma Sparrow from the University of Sussex, Will Sixsmith from Aberystwyth University and Rachel Cook from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Dean Downes-Avery, Tabitha Nicholls and Michael Davis all from Worthing College, Daniel White from The Littlehampton Academy Sixth Form and Chloe Rempel from Chichester College have all joined the Worthing business services team. In Gatwick, the business services team has welcomed Ben Roberts from Lancaster University, whilst the audit team has been joined by Thagendra Bura from the University of Kent and Jack Gamon who was an estate agent for two years prior to joining MHA Carpenter Box.
Two trainees, Frances Lornie and Max Lawton, have joined Thomas Coombs in Yorkshire. Lornie has already begun training and has started the AAT Level 2 qualification, meanwhile, Lawton holds a degree in accounting and finance and will study towards the ACA qualification.
Insolvency and restructuring firm, CVR Global, has appointed Tom Gardiner as an associate director. Gardiner is a licensed insolvency practitioner with more than 14 years’ experience of restructuring SMEs across various sectors, ranging from care homes and farms to automotive and retail operations. He has joined CVR Global’s Colchester office where he will be working with the existing team on developing the business throughout Essex and the East Anglia region. Before joining CVR Global, Gardiner ran the Essex office of a specialist recovery practice for over two years, and prior to that, was a senior manager in the high-risk credit team of a UK clearing bank.
Martin Baumann has been appointed chair of the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) for a three-year term beginning 1 January 2019. Baumann most recently served as chief auditor and director of professional standards at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), where he was responsible for establishing auditing and related professional practice standards for audits of all companies registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
