Interim managers appointed at animal charity

The Charity Commission has appointed interim managers to The Alternative Animal Sanctuary due to continued concerns about the governance and management of the charity

The move follows the opening of a statutory inquiry in March 2017 to examine the administration, governance and financial management of the charity, which is based in Lincoln.

The charity, whose stated aim is ‘taking in abandoned, unwanted and neglected animals’ has yet to file accounts for the year ending 31 March 2017. The most recent financial information available indicates that the charity’s income for the previous year was £1.3m, with 67% spent on income generation and governance and £428,000 (33%) used for charitable spending.

Phil Watts and Sarah Tomlinson of Anthony Collins Solicitors have been named as joint interim managers to the exclusion of the trustees under s76 (3)(g) of the Charities Act 2011 (CA 2011).

They will take on control of the management and administration of the charity from the current trustees, with the exception of the day-to-day care of the animals at the sanctuary, until the Commission makes a further order. The Commission’s investigation continues; it intends to publish a report setting out its findings on conclusion of the inquiry.
