ATT respond to HMRC consultation on tax return amendments

Released 06 February 2019

The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) has published its response to HMRC’s consultation on Amendments to tax returns.

The consultation was published on 7 November 2018 and sought to gather evidence on the issues taxpayers face when making an amendment. The ATT submission sets out the responses to a survey conducted jointly with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) based on questions posed by the consultation. This showed that the majority of those submitting amendments for income tax self-assessment, corporation tax and (to a lesser extent) VAT are relatively happy with the current processes. However, dissatisfaction was high with regards to PAYE and other employer returns and inheritance tax, with these being both more complicated and time consuming to amend. The ATT puts forward a number of suggested improvements based on the survey responses.
