HMRC highlight scams involving premium rate phone numbers to call HMRC
Released 12 June 2018
HMRC are highlighting misleading websites designed to make customers pay for services which should be free, or low cost, including calls to HMRC.
The websites may claim to be HMRC or to be affiliated with HMRC and will appear on internet searches for terms such as ‘HMRC helpline’. A link will appear to ‘call’ HMRC and customers are connected to HMRC’s genuine helplines but through a premium rate number at a high cost. HMRC’s contact numbers are charged at local rate and will be free for most mobile phone users. HMRC are advising customers to always go to GOV.UK to find their genuine contact details.
