Birmingham Local TV operator collapses

Birmingham Local TV Ltd (BLTV), the local TV franchise for Birmingham, has gone into administration before broadcasting its first programme which was due to hit the Freeview channels this autumn

BLTV, which also traded as City TV, was awarded an Ofcom licence in November 2012 and was set to start broadcasting programmes by a 12 November deadline. However, it failed to raise enough funding to finance the new channel and had not started trading or even opened a studio.

Administrators Duff & Phelps have been appointed to handle the potential sale or wind-up of the multi-platform local TV broadcaster. The restructure effort will be led by Matt Ingram and John Whitfield, partners in the Birmingham office of the restructuring expert.

Ingram said: ‘BLTV was awarded the licence for Birmingham local television following a lengthy competitive process, overseen by Ofcom.

‘Unfortunately, it would appear that, despite having demonstrated a comprehensive programming proposal, the company was unable to secure the necessary funding to get the project off the ground, having been awarded the licence.’

Duff & Phelps is hoping to find an alternative local TV operator to take on the licence.
