The government’s spending review, already scheduled for 25 November, will now also include an Autumn Statement giving updated economic forecasts, Chancellor George Osborne has announced
In a letter to Andrew Tyrie, chair of the Treasury select committee, Osborne confirmed that he has commissioned the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) to publish an autumn forecast on the same date.
‘As I have already announced a Spending Review for 25 November, I can therefore confirm that this event will be a joint Autumn Statement and Spending Review,’ Osborne wrote.
The OBR last published forecasts of growth and public borrowing ahead of the Summer Budget in July, and usually produces updated information to accompany standalone fiscal statements which are usually made in December and March.
Earlier this month Robert Chote was nominated to serve a second term of office as the OBR chair and said he welcomed moves to increase independent scrutiny of government finances.
